making progress in the kitchen

the moment i saw this kitchen posted on cote de texas everything changed.  i went from white cabinets to this gorgeous grey.  and from black soapstone countertops to white italian marble.
there are so many elements in this picture that inspired our kitchen design!

1.  the cabinet color!  benjamin moore's fieldstone
2.  white countertops (yes they will scratch, stain and chip...that's life!)
3.  those open shelves!  i brought this picture in to our cabinet man.
4. bridge faucet with a straight neck.
5.  wood floors, bin pulls, stainless appliances, apron front sink, white subway backsplash.
these are things we already were implementing so this solidified the deal!

below you see the beginning stages of the kitchen!  the wood beams on the ceiling are covered until the painters are done.

open shelves are up!

the brick "kick wall".  i don't know what else to call it.  :)  you know, the place where the kids kick their feet when they're sitting at the counter?  the kick wall.  trying to decide if it should be painted the color of the cabinets or the walls (a lighter grey).  any input?

  1. Now that's going to be a gorgeous kitchen. Wow! By the way, I loved your pantry post... we will be redoing our pantry here in the (hopefully) near future and I got some good ideas from you. So, thanks!

  3. My husband wants to do the same white "shiny" tile back splash as in the first photo and I'm not sure. Is that what you are going with as well? He loves it and I thought it looked "bathroom" style.
I'm not a professional, but I would paint the kids kick wall the color of the cabinets, b/c sometimes cabinets are in that spot and it is next to the wall and wall color.
Love your gorgeous house and all the photos, keep 'em coming!

  4. Wow! Your kitchen will be just as gorgeous I'm sure. I found your blog by way of Clover Lane this morning. Just wanted to say that I loved your comment about Angels protecting our children. I used to think about that so much more when my kiddos were younger...but it really is still true for them today. Thanks for the great reminder! Have a great day!

  6. Hi! I found your blog from Clover Lane. I am just loving watching your progress on your house! I love home improvement projects-it is such a creative process. You mentioned in one of your posts that you clip pictures to get a sense of your style. What magazines are you looking at to get all these ideas? I can't imagine how much work it must be to design each room. I agonize over the smallest decisions! :)

  7. carla - we are going with a beveled shiny white rectangular tile and having it set subway style. it's fairly popular so don't worry about it looking "bathroomy" :)

jen - :) i do believe what i say :) so glad it could speak to you.

ann - ahh...the inspiration binder. it's huge! :) i probably should do a post on it. i rip pages from ballard designs, pottery barn and other home decor magazines that are sent free to your home. i also love, house beautiful, country living, traditional home, southern living, elle decor, and on and on..... most magazines also have online galleries to peruse.

  8. we redid our kitchen 2 years ago with white cabinets and bianca carrara marble. It was funny how everyone tried to talk us out of the marble, but I still love it...it does scratch, but I've found that the scratches just buff out over time with all the counter wiping (6 kids=lots of wear and tear)! and we've had no staining problems. Get the honed finish!

  10. SO BEAUTIFUL! I am enjoying every post! As beautiful as the white kick wall would be .... with my children and our 'kick wall' something darker would be able to hide some of the kicking proof!

  16. thanks for the positive feedback ladies! okay...so far i have one vote for darker kick wall and one for light. it will either be: dark (like the cabinets) or light (like the walls)....hmmm....

also, we just found out we have to move the open shelves and two cabinets down 4 inches.....it shouldn't make too big a difference :)

and melanie...actually the island is going to be walnut...but you can still come visit! :)
